Home-cooked food marketplace ZuperMeal has received an investment of US$2 million (INR13 crore) from the promoters of kitchen appliances firm Wonderchef for an undisclosed stake.

Wonderchef promoters Sanjeev Kapoor and Ravi Saxena have jointly invested in ZuperMeal with two foreign partners.

Launched in July 2015 by Pallavi Saxena, ZuperMeal plans to utilise the funds to upgrade its technology, expand its network, add talent to the team and create brand awareness.

The ZuperMeal app facilitates picking up freshly-made home-cooked food and getting it delivered. It also handles the payments between consumers and providers.

At present, ZuperMeal has 150 homemakers registered on its platform and facilitates 60 to 70 meals a day, earning a net margin of 15 per cent, according to the website.

“This is an impressive growth for a new business within two months of its launch. The focus now is on social media connect and hyperlocal marketing,” said Prabhakar Banerjee, Chief Marketing Officer, ZuperMeal.

Pallavi Saxena says the Mumbai-based company aims to expand its network across 500 towns with 60,000 home chefs by 2020.

“To achieve our goals, the business model would need US$30 million of investment,” she said.

ZuperMeal plans to extend its reach beyond the top 10 cities to smaller towns to encourage home chefs to make their local specialties.

Launched on the Android platform, ZuperMeal plans to release an iOS-based app in November and is set to expand across India.

While Sanjeev Kapoor is a celebrity chef, Ravi Saxena is known for having built companies like Sodexo, Gloria Jean’s Coffees, the Yellow Chilli Restaurant franchise and Wonderchef.
